PALM HARBOR, FL — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a work-related accident that claimed the life of a 26-year-old man in Palm Harbor Wednesday afternoon.

According to the agency, deputies were called to the powerline easement area a few hundred feet east of Lake St. George and Chatham drives just before 2 p.m. Aug. 23. When they arrived, they learned that Steven Brakenwagen and his coworker Levi McFatter, 28, had been taking turns driving a Kubota tractor to spray vegetation near the powerlines. Both men, the sheriff’s office wrote in an email to media, were employed by Natur Chem and were doing contract work for Duke Energy.

McFatter, a Lake City resident, told deputies he was taking a break while Brakenwagen drove the tractor into a wooded area. When his coworker didn’t return, McFatter went to check on home. He "found the Kubota tractor overturned in a deep hole, with Brakenwagen trapped underneath and unresponsive," the email said.

McFatter called 911 after making the discovery.

Paramedics from Palm Harbor Fire Rescue responded, but pronounced Brakenwagen dead at the scene.

A crane was brought out to the site to recover Brakenwagen’s body, the sheriff’s office said. It took rescue workers about three hours.

"Deputies believe Brakenwagen did not see the steep embankment due to the thick vegetation," the email said. "As the tractor rolled down the embankment, Brakenwagen was ejected and pinned underneath."

The death appears to be accidental, the sheriff’s office said, but remains under investigation. Deputies also notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration about the death.

No further information about the Obrien, Florida, man’s death is being released at this time.

Di PESA, Mary Jane (O’Hara) Of Milton and Scituate, a loving mother and grandmother, died on April 20, 2018. She was 88 years old. Mary Jane was born in Boston. She was the daughter of Dorothy O’Hara and Francis J. O’Hara. She also resided in Falmouth-Foreside Maine and Palm Beach Florida. She attended Jeanne D’Arc Academy, Milton, MA, Graham-Eckes Palm Beach Academy, and Mount Vernon College in Washington D.C. In 1952, she married William (Bill) Francis Di Pesa. Her overriding interests were her family and her community. She enjoyed spending her days with her children and grandchildren. Her Roman Catholic faith was an important part of her life as evidenced by her active participation in St. Agatha’s Parish in Milton. She was involved in numerous charities including Cardinal Cushing Centers, Catholic Charities, and Fontbonne Academy. She and her husband, Bill were awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award at St. Coletta’s of Massachusetts. Mary Jane was a parishioner of St. Agatha’s Church in Milton, MA, a member of Scituate Harbor Yacht Club Scituate, Hatherly Country Club Scituate, Wollaston Golf Club Milton, Lago Mar, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, the Innercircle and The Lunch Bunch. Mary Jane is survived by eight children; Dolly Di Pesa, Carolyn Di Pesa, Charles Di Pesa and his wife Sue, David Di Pesa, Elizabeth Di Pesa, Joseph Di Pesa and his wife Taryn, Thomas Di Pesa and his wife Janice, MJ and her husband Cathal Nolan and 18 grandchildren. I fancy myself a whiskey enthusiast, which can be as interesting to hear about as someone’s garden gnome collection, barring a listener of similar persuasion.

I’m okay with the small degree of insufferable attitude that comes with being a whiskey nerd, especially if it occasionally takes me to excellent whiskey bars that I would have missed were I not actively scouring for them, like Palm Harbor’s Catcher and the Rye restaurant.

The bars that come to mind when thinking about great whiskey selection in the bay area are high-end hot spots in downtown St. Pete and Tampa — bars that wouldn’t be out of place in the Manhattan of J.D. Salinger’s iconic novel.

Ironically (and compellingly), Catcher and the Rye forgoes the urban, upscale vibe of the modern whiskey bar altogether, delivering instead a healthy dose of Old Florida charm, which puts it comfortably at home in Palm Harbor’s quaint downtown area.

Catcher is located in a corner lot, next door to Two Lions Winery & Palm Harbor Brewery (same place, if you’re wondering). Catcher is spacious and makes good use of an open-air layout, wherein a central bar and dining room area blends into a wraparound patio, fresh air blowing freely throughout the interior.

If you wonder what I mean by Old Florida charm, picture walking past some tall grass up to a patio constructed of crushed sea shells, with Adirondack chairs facing a small patch of lawn. Walking up the steps into what appears to be a converted, old, flat-roofed home, you pass by a friendly cat posted at the entrance.

Inside, the vibe isn’t dissimilar to an average mom-and-pop bar and grill, save for an impressive array of bottles behind the bar, stacked and displayed in homemade shelving crafted from recycled pallets.

When Catcher and the Rye opened just over a year ago, the idea was a strong emphasis on whiskey of all kinds, especially rye. I think it’s fair to say that the Catcher folks have done just that.

The whiskey (and whisky — Catcher’s menu properly makes the distinction between Canadian/scotch/Japanese and American/rye/bourbon spellings) menu is outstanding by any measure, made even more impressive by the fact that this is a family-friendly Palm Harbor restaurant and not a fancy cocktail bar populated by terrible hipsters like myself.

The bar ages three of its own Knob Creek whiskeys in house and serves them in tailored old-fashioneds, offers pre-selected flights of various whiskey styles and stocks more than 100 labels behind the bar, ranging from old standbys and high-end splurges to lesser-known brands well worth discovering.

Of course, the bar menu isn’t limited to whiskey. There are about two dozen wines on hand, as well as a very good selection of beers on draft, including many local options from breweries like Cycle, de Bine, Crooked Thumb, Escape, Two Henrys and Tampa Bay Brewing Company. Naturally, Alltech Lexington’s Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is also on draft.

There are a handful of tempting house cocktails not involving whiskey, but I couldn’t resist trying the smoked old-fashioned, which consists of Buffalo Trace, house-made chai bitters and a flamed orange peel, served in a glass smoked over a slice of cedar. It’s a top seller at Catcher, and I didn’t have any trouble understanding why.

For my money, this is the place to do some whiskey exploring. The menu gives helpful and on-point information for the major styles of whiskey, even explaining the difference between Tennessee whiskey and its close cousin, bourbon (Cliffs Notes: charcoal filtration). The prices are great across the board, and they’re downright unbelievable on Wednesday nights, when all whiskeys priced $10 and above are half off, as are bottles of wine.

Can’t justify a $22 glass of Whistle Pig Old World Marriage? Wash down your Wednesday night dinner with an $11 glass instead.

Catcher and the Rye is an easy pick for downtown Palm Harbor drinking and dining, but if you’re serious — or seriously curious — about your whiskey, then consider it a can’t-miss. The prices alone make it a winner, but it’s clear that the bar program was put together by real whiskey fans, delivering an experience that goes beyond just a good selection.

Mary Katherine Aitkenhead, 92, of Palm Harbor, FL died Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at her home in Southern Shores, NC. A native of Holyoke, MA, she was born August 15, 1925, to the late Katarzyna Bozek and Anthony P. Roj.

Graduating from Holyoke High School with the class of 1943, Mary Kay worked as a secretary for Hampden Glaze in Holyoke, later moving with her family to South Hadley, MA, where she worked as a bank teller and administrative secretary for Hampshire National Bank.

Throughout her life, Mary Kay was very involved in her church. At Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in Holyoke, MA, she was very active in a variety of church activities. She taught catechism at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in South Hadley, MA and sang in the choir at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Palm Harbor, FL.

Mary Kay is survived by her husband, William B. Aitkenhead; two sons, William B. Aitkenhead III (Patricia) of Southern Shores, NC and David A. Aitkenhead (Nydia) of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Scot Aitkenhead (Michele), Lori Aitkenhead, and David Moreau (Katherine); five great-grandchildren, Sloane, Jase and Logan Aitkenhead, Evan and Ariel Moreau; along with thirty-two nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews and great-great-nieces/nephews.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers that she loved dearly, Sebastian Roi, Joseph Roj, and Edward Roy.

Mary’s faith and family were at the center of her life. She was a loving and committed partner to her husband of more than 70 years. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of pride. She had a close and loving relationship with her many nieces and nephews and the help of her countless friends provided immeasurable support.

Mary’s family would like to thank Dare County Hospice for their tender care of mom and extend a special thanks to Trish Robbins for the love, kindness and countless hours of loving care she provided to our mother.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, April 9, 2018, at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church by the Rev. John A. Hanley, osfs. The family will receive friends and relatives Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo.

In the span of 10 minutes on Sunday, Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed each faced 72nd-hole birdie attempts that would determine their fate at the Valspar Championship. In both instances, the expectation was that the two players would at least give their putts a chance to drop.

Dr. Bob Rotella even said as much while watching the telecast. The noted sports psychologist, who works with a number of tour players including Justin Thomas, was sitting with a group of mini-tour players when he announced, “The one thing they say about great players in a moment like this is they won’t leave it short.”

Then both players left their attempts short—Reed’s woefully so—and Rotella was left to clarify.

“That’s actually a bit of a lie,” he allowed.

To golfers of any level, there’s a certain level of shame attached to players who leave important putts short—the golf equivalent of striking out with the bases loaded and their bat never leaving their shoulders. So how could two of the best players in the world commit such a sin in such a crucial moment Sunday? Were their insufficient strokes a product of cowardice or an unwilling subconscious?

Rotella says the answer could be simpler than that.

“I don’t believe guys are telling themselves to not leave putts short,” Rotella said. “I think they’re seeing the ball go in and putting it. So I think if a guy putts the putt to make it and comes up short, he just has a wrong idea of the speed of the green.”

Rotella’s argument takes on credence when factoring in two other considerations: that multiple players struggled with the speed of the challenging 18th green at Innsibrook; and that Woods’ 40-foot birdie putt on the preceding hole was such a precise measurement of speed that the ball barely died into the cup. Although it might sound counterintuitive, Rotella says the bolder play is to hit the ball softer than harder because it suggests you’re more intent on the putt going in rather than merely getting it close.

“You can always hit it hard,” Rotella said. “Guys who want to just look good can say ‘I got it there.’ It’s when you’re actually trying to make it that you risk leaving it short.”

The episode speaks to the chasm between playing for millions on the PGA Tour and simply looking to avoid humiliation at home. According to Jeff Ritter, one of Golf Digest’s Best Young Teachers based in Bend, Oregon, the common miscalculation by middle handicappers is judging a putt’s pace to the hole rather than through the hole. The latter helps to assure a decent lag, but for Woods on the 18th hole, only one outcome mattered.

“With Tiger you can see how upset he was because he was playing to win,” Ritter said. “He wasn’t worried about the next putt because it didn’t matter if to him if he finished second or 60th.”
